What Pierce’s Twitter Controversy Teaches us About Humility and Social Media

Posted: May 21st, 2010 | Author: Shaun | Filed under: Considerations, social media | Tags: , , , | View Comments

Celtics forward Paul Pierce was feeling himself after his teams defeat against the Orlando Magic Tuesday night. He had some swag in his step. Maybe a little too much of it. After the game, Pierce was anything but humble in on-court post game interview with ESPN.

Around the same time of that interview, Pierce posted a tweet that said, “Anybody got a BROOM?”

Whoa, Pierce, chill man. There’s no need to tweet that. Or did you? According to Pierce and Athlete Interactive -  company that manages his digital media, his twitter account, @paulpierce34, was hacked.  Apparently the folks over at Twitter did a great job at regaining control of Pierce’s so called hacked account, because a day later he tweeted the following:

Now whether his account was hacked or not is irrelevant, but Pierce’s over-confidence can teach all of us who frequently use social media a lesson – Tweet and update with Humility! Most of us don’t have a whole agency or team of PR reps to cover up a possible gaffe on Twitter, so that’s why we all have to tweet with a little self control out there. We should be confident, share our ideas and be opinionated, because all that stuff makes Twitter the engaging platform that it is. But, that doesn’t mean we should hide behind the safety of a Twitter handle to talk smack, ridicule, and act like someone we aren’t. You wouldn’t pad your resume with experience you don’t have would you? Nah, of course you wouldn’t, because that will catch up with you later, so don’t pad your social media presence either! I mean, we all try make ourselves out to look a little better or cooler than we really are out there, but just don’t over do it.

When tweeting, facebooking, and blogging, always remember who you are and who is listening, because sometimes we forget.

Profile: Chris Johnson – How He Built a Fitness Community On and Offline

Posted: April 25th, 2010 | Author: Zach | Filed under: Video, social media | Tags: , , , | View Comments

This is a special post featuring Chris Johnson, a personal trainer and aptly named Sports Scientist. Chris, who recently made an appearance giving marathon training advice on NECN, has found success using social media and online marketing to gain client leads and grow his budding career.

Iamoptimal.com is a social network where people can get together to share their interest in fitness. Visitors can become members by joining “Team Optimal” where they can make a profile, ask each other questions, upload video, chat live with an IM feature, and even get V.I.P. discounts on over 50 name brands.

I am Optimal was founded and designed by a recent Lasell college graduate and Sports Scientist named Chris Johnson, who came up with the idea after realizing it could be hard for people to find advice, events, and online content on their favorite fitness hobbies and sports from a real personal trainer. With that consumer need in place, he created an online community where people can share information with each other and personally interact with a fitness instructor.

“This community fills in the missing gap people get after high school and college sports. It makes them feel like a part of something again. The best part of all, it is a pro-health community. I am not supporting spending endless hours on the social network, but instead simply finding and sharing information and using it towards improving your fitness regimen or gaining results in the gym or on the playing field.”

Chris Johnson has managed to use his social network to build up his personal training and lifestyle consulting business in a way that has not been seen before. Aside from managing I am Optimal , Chris Johnson uses social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, and email marketing to increase his online following of fitness enthusiasts.

“As a domain expert in sports science, I am able to answer many of the questions and post many of the topics myself, proving I have the knowledge and ability if the fitness field to help people reach their goals. I also added a feature called ‘Ask an Expert’ where I am the expert the members come to ask. This allows people to come and test my knowledge specifically.”

Chris Johnson is also the owner of Optimal Performance Personal Training and Lifestyle Consulting www.improvewithchris.com. He decided to keep the two websites separate. One is for business, and the other is for “changing the way the world views fitness.”

Chad Ochocinco To Open NFL News Network via Social Networking, Twitter

Posted: October 25th, 2009 | Author: Shaun | Filed under: social media | View Comments

Chad Ochocinco

Bengals wide-out Chad Ochocinco plans to produce a new NFL news network to keep fans updated on the latest happenings within the league.  The network is aptly titled Ochocinco News Network, OCNN, and news will be released through Twitter. One of the brands who he has a sponsorship deal with, Motorolla, will provide the technology. #85 is clearly very business savvy, he’s already got an iPhone app out, and now this.  From Motorolla’s standpoint, this a good move for them as well.

According to an article on ESPN.com:

Motorola is using the venture to promote its MOTOBLUR technology. Ochocinco will use one of the company’s Cliq mobile devices for his new social network. Motorola marketing officer Bill Ogle said Ochocinco “brings order and clarity to a multifaceted lifestyle as a professional athlete, entertainer and devoted social networker.”

I’ll definitely be getting my news from Ochocinco when his new network comes out.  I love the guy. He’s hilarious. Now if only he would focus as much on football as he did on business. I need those fantasy points!

From Old School To New School – “Shift Happens” (video)

This is my first post in while! I tweeted about this video last night but I figured I would share it on the blog as well, because it’s very well put together.  As much as everyone talks about the changing media landscape, no one has really done a good job at making a powerful video that shows its impact.  The Economist, in partnership with XPLANE, has done just that.
