For the last two week I was in Mexico for a service learning trip through my school. It truly is an amazing place and I had a great time. While I was there I was always on the lookout for advertisements and other forms of media, however one thing that I kept seeing over and over while I was down there was advertisements for Sol Beer. Sol is the first Mexican sunshine beer and was developed and brewed near Mexico City. I traveled through central Mexico by bus and cab and the one thing I saw over and over was all types of print ads for Sol beer, it truly is everywhere. Street signs, walls, spray painted and posters, billboards, stickers and banners. Every form of print ad is used in Mexico and Sol is known and sold all over( it’s even sold in 7/11 and grocery stores). That was really the only advertising/media that I wanted to post about.

From Old School To New School – “Shift Happens” (video)

This is my first post in while! I tweeted about this video last night but I figured I would share it on the blog as well, because it’s very well put together.  As much as everyone talks about the changing media landscape, no one has really done a good job at making a powerful video that shows its impact.  The Economist, in partnership with XPLANE, has done just that.

Never Heard of Boone Oakley Before? Now You Do.

The innovative ideas just keep flowing.  This agency out of North Carolina, Boone Oakley, made a YouTube video their agency website.  It works just like a regular website. There is a home page, news, bios, showcased work, and a list of clients.  The contact page has a number and email, and also directs you to send them a You Tube video ( hint: might a smart move to show interest in a job at Boone Oakley that way , but be creative!).

The 1:30 mark gave me a chuckle or two.

Introducing Hulu Desktop

Hulu Desktop might just become the best thing ever. Hulu gets it.  This new application from Hulu is in its experimental phase, and it basically turns your PC or Mac into full-fledged TV set.  Once you open the program, a show starts playing. If you don’t like what’s on, then pick a new show or movie with the remote that comes with your computer.  Check out the other new Hulu Labs programs. There’s also a personalized video panel designer, time based browsing and personalized recommendations.

I expect to see a lot more shows offered on Hulu, as ABC just put down their stake in the ever-growing company, originally a joint venture between NBC and FOX.  It’ll be interesting to see how Hulu grows and how it will change the landscape of TV watching and media planning and buying.

Jacek Utko May Be on to Something Here

inspiration, vision, determination. to be good, is not enough – Jacek Utko

Watch this video please. Listen to how Polish newspaper designer Jacek Utko is single-handedly saving the newspaper business in Eastern Europe. Through design.  American newspapers, hire this guy please! I think design can save the newspaper. Newspapers aren’t just dying because information is so readily available online, but because peoples attention spans today last about .00383 seconds. Better designed newspapers can grab readers attentions.  Newspapers need to think about how they brand themselves if they want to stay competitive in todays society.
